The 1,000-acre Kitty Todd Nature Preserve was established in 1972 to protect one of the finest remaining examples of Northwest Ohio's Oak Openings Region. It is home to the globally endangered black oak savanna community and boasts one of the highest concentrations of rare species of any nature preserve in the state, including the state endangered lark sparrow and the federally endangered Karner blue butterfly. A one-mile loop trail is rated easy. Activities include hiking, wildlife watching, volunteer opportunities (contact sross@tnc.org). In mid-May, the preserve holds its annual Blue Weekend, with speakers and naturalists, and native plants for sale.
